Abstract

Formation of Bhikhuni-Sangha by Buddha was a major event in the empowerment of women in the spiritual world. Before Buddha, most rituals were barred for women. There was no place for enlightenment if the person has taken birth in female body. This editorial reflects on the circumstances that led Buddha to form Bhikhuni-sangha. It elaborates on rules that Buddha devised, considering the social conventions, and yet going beyond them to ensure spiritual growth for all seeking enlightenment, irrespective of the gender.
