The usefulness of the Ten Bhūmi in the Practice of a Bodhisattva

Abstract

India has had a tradition since ancient times, with the greatest emphasis on sadhana. With the help of sadhana, a person can stabilize his mind. In Buddhism, higher emphasis is placed on the mind. The first two verses of Dhammapada are on the mind. They say that the mind is most important, and inspired by the mind, the act done by the person results in a Karma- which follows it like a shadow. Bad deeds result in bad consequences.

Buddhist literature gives importance to the concept of Bodhisattva - the one who works only for the good of others. The journey of Bodhisattva goes through the ten Bodhi-lands.

The ten Bodhi- lands play a significant role in giving Bodhisattva a true meaning because it brings about a change inside.

In the given research paper, the different Bodhisattva lands will be described in detail, which will help us understand the Bodhisattva journey, considered the most challenging journey.

भारत में अर्वाचीन काल से ही परम्परा रही है, जिसमें साधना पर सर्वाधिक बल दिया गया है। साधना से ही व्यक्ति अपने चित्त में स्थिरता का भाव उत्पन्न करता था। बौद्ध ग्रन्थों में चित्त को आधार बनाते हुए कार्य करने पर अधिक जोर दिया गया है। यहाँ तक की बौद्ध ग्रन्थ ‘धम्मपद’ की प्रथम दो गाथाएँ चित्त को आधार बनाते हुए लिखी हुयी है, जिसमें बताया गया है कि चित्त से प्रेरित होकर व्यक्ति जिस प्रकार कार्य करता है तब उनके परिणाम उसके पीछे ऐसे ही रहते हैं जिस प्रकार व्यक्ति के पीछे उसकी छाया रहती है। अकुशल कर्मों का विपाक अकुशल ही रहता है।
बोधिसत्त्व बौद्ध साहित्य में वर्णित एक ऐसी अवधारणा है, जो परहित को आधार बनाते हुए जीवन जीने में विश्वास रखता है। उस परहित को आधार बनाने के पश्चात उसे स्वयं ही साधना के कई सोपानों को पूर्ण करना पड़ता है। जिसमें से भूमियों की अवस्था भी महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखती है। जीवन को वास्तविक रूप में समझने में साधना का योगदान मनुष्य जीवन में अहम् होता है। एवं साधकों हेतु तो यह जीवन का सर्वोच्च लक्ष्य होता है।
यह भूमियाँ ही बोधिसत्त्व को यथार्थ भाव प्रदान करने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका प्रदान करती है। क्योंकि ये ही परत-दर-परत उसके अन्दर बदलाव एवं सामर्थ्य का बोध कराती है।
प्रस्तुत शोध-पत्र में बोधिसत्त्व से लेकर एक-एक भूमि वाली अवस्था का विस्तार से वर्णन किया जायेगा, जो कहीं न कहीं बोधिसत्त्व की उस अध्यात्मिक यात्रा को समझने में सहायता प्रदान करेगा, जो उसकी साधना का सबसे दुर्गम पथ माना जाता है।
